Water Soluble Cytotoxic Waste Laundry Bags | Hygiene, Compliance and Waste Reduction

Handling cytotoxic contaminated linen is a critical safety and operational concern for hospitals, oncology units, and pharmaceutical facilities. Zero Pac’s water soluble cytotoxic waste laundry bags provide a practical solution, offering hygienic, compliant, and efficient linen management, while also helping divert waste from incineration.

Made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), these bags fully dissolve in hot water, allowing contaminated textiles to be safely washed without opening the bag. This eliminates exposure risks and enables the safe reuse of linen previously destined for incineration.

What Is a Water Soluble Cytotoxic Waste Laundry Bag?

A water soluble laundry bag for cytotoxic waste is specifically designed to contain garments or linen exposed to chemotherapy drugs and hazardous cytotoxic agents. These bags are often coloured and labeled in purple to comply with hospital and clinical waste handling protocols.

Unlike traditional methods that rely on incineration, Zero Pac’s bags allow soiled items to be safely laundered and reused. They dissolve completely in hot water, preventing any direct contact or release of contaminants.

How Do Dissolvable Cytotoxic Laundry Bags Work?

  1. Place contaminated linen or garments directly into the bag.
  2. Use the tear-away tie at the top to seal the bag securely.
  3. Place the sealed bag directly into a commercial washing machine.
  4. At 70°C or higher, the bag dissolves completely during the wash cycle.
  5. Laundry is cleaned thoroughly while the bag disintegrates without leaving any residue.

What Are the Cytotoxic Laundry Bags Made From?

Zero Pac’s cytotoxic waste laundry bags are manufactured from polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), a water-soluble, non-toxic polymer. PVOH is strong and durable when dry, yet dissolves quickly and safely in hot water, leaving no microplastics or residue.

This material is widely trusted in healthcare environments for its safe interaction with wastewater systems and its effectiveness in preventing cross-contamination.

Why Avoid Incineration of Cytotoxic Linen?

Traditionally, cytotoxic contaminated textiles are bagged and incinerated to avoid contamination risks. However, this practice:

  • Increases operational and environmental costs
  • Leads to the loss of reusable textiles
  • Generates carbon emissions and waste

Zero Pac’s water soluble bags offer a better approach, enabling the safe washing and reuse of cytotoxic linen while maintaining full compliance with safety standards.

ZeroPac’s Water Soluble Cytotoxic Waste Laundry Bags

We’ve been using ZeroPac’s Water Soluble Cytotoxic Waste Laundry Bags for just over six months now, and I can honestly say they've made a big difference in our infection control protocols. These bags completely dissolve in the wash cycle, meaning our team no longer has to manually handle contaminated laundry, which greatly reduces risk and stress for our staff.

They’re incredibly easy to use—just tie them up and toss them straight into the washer. No residue, no tearing, and no unpleasant odours. We’ve trialled similar products in the past, but ZeroPac’s bags stand out for their durability and reliability. Even during heavy-duty laundry loads, they hold up until the precise moment they’re meant to dissolve.

We also appreciate ZeroPac’s focus on sustainability and compliance. The bags meet our facility’s safety standards, and the clear labelling and colour-coding help keep our workflow organised.

Highly recommend these for any facility handling cytotoxic materials. It’s one of those products that quietly improves safety and efficiency every day.
