How Pallet Wrap Supports Freight Security+

Pallet wrap is the primary method for securing goods during storage and transport. The film is applied under tension around the pallet, creating a tight containment force that holds cartons, products and irregular items together as a single unit. This prevents load shifting, toppling and product damage during handling and transit.

For hand application, the operator walks around the pallet while dispensing the film from a hand roll. The film stretches during application, creating elastic tension that holds the load tight. Machine application uses semi-automatic or fully automatic turntable, rotary arm or orbital wrappers that apply film at consistent tension and speed for uniform results across every pallet.

Choosing the right thickness depends on load type. Lighter, stable loads can use thinner 17um film for cost savings. Standard mixed carton pallets suit 20um film. Heavy, sharp-edged or unstable loads benefit from 23um film for maximum puncture resistance and containment force. Bundle wrap handles smaller items that need to be grouped together before palletising or shipping.

Hand Wrap vs Machine Wrap+

Hand wrap is designed for manual application and suits operations wrapping fewer than 15 pallets per day. The shorter rolls are lighter and easier to handle, and no equipment investment is required. Machine wrap is designed for semi-automatic and fully automatic wrapping systems and suits operations wrapping 15 or more pallets per day. Machine rolls are longer, reducing changeover time on busy lines. Machine application also delivers more consistent tension and film usage, reducing waste and improving load stability. For operations wrapping high volumes, machine wrap typically delivers a lower cost per pallet wrapped due to higher stretch ratios and reduced labour time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What thickness should I use?+

Choose based on your load type. 17um suits lighter, stable loads like uniform cartons and provides the best cost per pallet. 20um is the all-rounder for mixed carton pallets and general warehousing. 23um is best for heavy loads, sharp-edged products or unstable pallets that need maximum containment and puncture resistance.

Can I use machine wrap in a hand dispenser?+

No. Machine wrap rolls are designed for wrapping machines and are too heavy and long for manual application. The core size and roll weight are not compatible with hand dispensers. Use the dedicated hand wrap product for manual application.

What is bundle wrap used for?+

Bundle wrap is a narrow 100 mm width stretch film used to group small items together. Common uses include bundling pipes, tubes, timber, cartons and components. The narrow width allows precise wrapping around smaller items that would be impractical with a full 500 mm hand wrap roll.

How many pallets can I wrap per roll?+

This depends on pallet size, load height and the number of wraps applied. As a general guide, a 400 m hand wrap roll covers approximately 15 to 25 standard pallets. Machine wrap rolls cover significantly more due to higher stretch ratios and longer roll lengths. Your actual yield will vary based on wrapper settings and load requirements.

What does one-side cling mean?+

One-side cling means only the inner face of the film is tacky. The outer face remains smooth and non-sticky. This allows the film to cling tightly to itself when wrapped around a pallet, but prevents it from sticking to adjacent pallets, racking or other surfaces in storage.

Is pallet wrap recyclable?+

Yes. Stretch film is recyclable through soft plastic recycling programs. Many warehouses and distribution centres collect used pallet wrap separately for recycling. Clean, dry film can be baled and sent to soft plastic recyclers. Contaminated or wet film should go to general waste.

Will this work with my wrapping machine?+

The machine wrap products are 500 mm width on standard cores and are compatible with most semi-automatic and fully automatic wrapping machines including turntable, rotary arm and orbital systems. If you are unsure about compatibility with your specific equipment, contact our team with your machine make and model for guidance.
