Hot Water Soluble Laundry Bags – Reliable Hygiene for High-Risk Linen

In medical, aged care, and commercial laundry environments, infection control and safe handling of soiled laundry are top priorities. Zero Pac’s hot water soluble laundry bags are designed to reduce exposure risks, streamline laundry workflows, and enhance hygiene protocols, without compromising safety or sustainability.

These innovative bags are made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and fully dissolve during hot water wash cycles, allowing contaminated linens to be washed without removing them from the bag. Whether handling medical garments, incontinence linen, or high-risk laundry from quarantine and healthcare settings, our hot water soluble bags offer an effective, trusted solution.

What Is a Hot Water Soluble Laundry Bag?

A hot water soluble laundry bag is a purpose designed bag made from a special water-soluble film that dissolves completely when exposed to hot water, typically at temperatures of 60°C or higher.  These bags are commonly used to isolate and transport soiled, infectious or contaminated linen, without requiring staff to open or handle contents before washing.

The bag is placed directly into the washing machine, where it dissolves during the hot water cycle, releasing the laundry inside for cleaning. This approach significantly reduces the risk of cross-contamination and helps hospitals, aged care facilities and laundries to meet strict hygiene standards.

How Do Hot Water Soluble Laundry Bags Work?

Zero Pac’s hot water soluble bags follow a simple and highly effective process:

  1. Load Soiled Laundry – Linen, garments, or other contaminated textiles are placed into the bag.
  2. Seal Securely – Each bag includes a built-in tear-away tie at the top, which is used to quickly and safely close the bag.
  3. Place in Washer – The sealed bag is loaded directly into the commercial or hospital washing machine.
  4. Hot Water Cycle Activates Dissolution – At a temperature of around 60°C or above, the bag dissolves completely in the water.
  5. Laundry is Washed Normally – The contents are released inside the drum and cleaned thoroughly, while the bag material washes away safely through the drainage system.

The result? No bag to dispose of, no contact with soiled items, and no residual waste.

What Are Hot Water Soluble Bags Made Of?

Zero Pac’s bags are manufactured from polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) a water-soluble, non-toxic and biodegradable polymer that is widely used in medical and sanitation settings.

Key characteristics of PVOH:

  • Soluble in water at high temperatures
  • Non-toxic and safe for use around people and pets
  • Breaks down into harmless natural compounds
  • Compatible with commercial laundry systems
  • Strong and tear-resistant when dry, reliable when needed

Once exposed to hot water, the PVOH film begins to break down quickly and completely, with no microplastics or physical remnants left behind.

What Are Hot Water Soluble Laundry Bags Used For?

These bags are an essential part of handling contaminated or infectious linen in industries where safety and sanitation are paramount. Common use cases include:

  • Hospitals & Healthcare – For isolating infectious or biohazardous linen from wards, surgeries and isolation rooms.
  • Aged Care Facilities – Ideal for handling incontinence sheets, medical uniforms,\ and resident garments with minimal exposure.
  • Commercial Laundries – Allows for hygienic bulk processing of high-risk laundry from various clients.
  • Quarantine & Emergency Services – Used to safely handle garments exposed to biological contaminants.
